Great Wine and Great Art

Wine and Art in BerlinIt’s often been said that great wines are like great art, but it took a group of art galleries in Berlin and the VDP Prädikat Wine Estates (an association of producers of German wines) actually to combine the two.

On September 5, 2010, all 195 members of the association, which is celebrating its centennial, will present their finest wines in the context of contemporary art in 70 galleries in the German capital city.

The colonnade of the old National Gallery on Berlin’s Museum Island (map) will serve as a central information and meeting point. Guests will be able to get an overview of when and where what’s happening and join group tours into the world of “wine & art” (advance reservations are recommended, although some last-minute tours will be offered).

Note: the name of this event in German is 70 Galerien, VDP-Winzer, 1000 Weine – Unser Adler ist die Kunst. Fortunately, the information on VBP’s centennial celebration is available online in English!

Throughout the afternoon between noon and 6 p.m., guests can either stroll or take one of the special shuttle buses from gallery to gallery. Alternatively, bicycles and rickshaws will be available at the colonnade. Numerous sponsors will also be on hand at the central information and meeting point to talk about their wines.

The tourism specialists at Visit Berlin have assembled some packages (starting at 219 € per person). Not only is admission to the guided tour of the 70 galleries included, but also two hotel nights, a Berlin Welcome Card for free public transportation, a catalogue of all participating winemakers and galleries, an exclusive “kitchen party” at the Palace Hotel, and a bottle of wine!
