The Temple Bar Food Market in Dublin

One of the most tourist-popular areas of Dublin City Center is the historic district of Temple Bar. This small strip along the River Liffey has earned a reputation as a hotspot for nightlife, but really it is more tourists and bachelor parties than local Dubliners who frequent these pubs. If you’re looking for an authentic Temple Bar experience, return during the day to see how this district is redefining itself as a place for artists and foodies.

The Temple Bar food market is one of those attractions that will make you wish you had a lot more money. If you have a lot of money, you’re in luck, there are enough treats at this market to create a gourmet picnic you’ll never forget. Located in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar, you will find everything from sweet crepes to freshly baked bread or scones to a variety of Irish cheeses. While there are many types of delicious ethnic cuisine on offer as well, I’d recommend sticking to the Irish specialties and get to know local flavors.

Your taste buds are in for a treat at this market. If you’ve always stayed away from oysters, there is no time like the present to give them a try. You can purchase them individually or sit down with a friend to enjoy a half dozen. My advice is to first survey the whole market before you buy. You won’t want to have buyer’s regret as you see something scrumptious only once your belly is full. Take a full survey of what’s on offer before starting to make your purchases.

Then, choose a strategy. If you’re planning a picnic, choose items that will package and carry easily, such as marinated olives, cheese, fresh bread, pies, or sweet desserts. On the other hand, if you’re starving and don’t want to walk to nearby St Stephens Green, go for the readily prepared items such as lamb skewers (lamb in Ireland is outrageously good) or one of the crepes or sandwiches that are made to order. Wash it all down with a gourmet coffee and voila, you’ve been introduced to the culinary market scene of Dublin!
