Knit Your Own Dinner!

A fascinating exhibition has just opened at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London – Kate Jenkins’ ‘Come Dine with Kate’, in which a complete dinner party has been crocheted and knitted, appliquéd and embroidered.

It's a pie, and it's got pigs in it...

There’s a rich vein of fantasy in this work, so don’t expect photorealism. For instance the pork pie, cut open, is full of little pink pigs, and the rabbit pie is stuffed full of goofy rabbits and big orange carrots. ‘Beef woolington’ shows just how to divide a bull into joints, like the butchery diagrams in Mrs Beeton, while gourmets will enjoy the crocheted champagne , and low life is represented by ‘Yarnmite’ (100% vegetarian, it promises on the label). There’s even ‘sewshi’ (groan) and a knitted bento box.

I’m not sure I’d class this as ‘great art’ necessarily, but it’s witty and immensely enjoyable – which is more than you can say of some BritArt…

Till 24 July at Rebecca Hossack Gallery, 28 Charlotte Street, W1T 2NA

When: Mon-Sat 10-6
