Whale Watch at Kingfisher Bay Resort

Whale watching is quite an experience but it’s not usually an activity that I would associate with luxury travel but Kingfisher Bay Resort in Australia (map) allows whale lovers to get up close and personal with one of nature’s most incredible creatures – humpback whales – without foregoing modern comforts.

Accommodations

The Kingfisher Bay eco resort is located on Fraser Island and, in addition to winning more than a dozen tourism awards, was crowned “Best Beach Resort in Australia” by Discovery’s Travel Channel.

The accommodations were designed to be kind to the environment and minimize waste (which is turned into compost at the onsite worm farm!) but are comfortable enough to meet the needs of luxury-minded travelers.  Guests can choose from a resort hotel room, villa or beach house!

Dining

There are restaurants to choose from at the Kingfisher Bay Resort.  The Seabelle Restaurant is an award-winning eatery offering meals prepared with local produce, paired with regional wines.  The Maheno restaurant offers a buffet and poolside dining.  Those looking for a more casual experience and a cold beer might enjoy the Sand Bar and Bistro which offers poolside dining in a bush-covered sand nook.  The Jetty Hut is the perfect place to sip on a cocktail and watch the sunset.

Fraser and Whales Package

The resort is running whale watching excursions direct from Fraser Island to Platypus Bay.  The “Fraser and Whales” package includes two nights’ accommodation, breakfast, ferry transfers and a half-day whale watch cruise $389pp (AUD).

For those who want to whale watch but don’t need the package, half-day tours are offered from $105pp (AUD) as part of the resort’s regular activity schedule.
