A little Lonely Planet history -
It all started when Tony and Maureen Wheeler met on a park bench. After getting married, they decided to cross Europe and Asia overland for their honeymoon. After several months of earning, begging, or borrowing money, they made it. After the experience, friends urged them to create a guide, and after several long nights, their first travel guide was born – Across Asia on the Cheap. They sold 1500 copies within the first week and thus, Lonely Planet was born.
Two years later they traveled around Southeast Asia on a shoestring budget, which led to books on Nepal, Australia, Africa, and India, and they just kept going!
30 years later, Lonely Planet became a well-known brand in the travel world, and in October of 2007, BBC Worldwide acquired a 75% share in Lonely Planet, agreeing to continue Lonely Planet’s reputation of trustworthy advice and editorial independence.
Today, Tony and Maureen are still actively involved in Lonely Planet and traveling more than ever. The company has grown to include over 500 staff members and 300 authors, with offices in Melbourne, London, and Oakland.
The company is still driven by the original philosophy, “All you’ve got to do is decide to go and the hardest part is over. So go!”
