Seattle Day Trip: Mud Mountain Dam

When the sunny weather returns, and it will, pack up the car and head off on a leisurely day trip to Mud Mountain Dam near Mount Rainier.  Mud Mountain Dam is situated on the White River, and was built by the Army Corps of Engineers for flood control.  In addition to its original and practical use, it has since become a popular recreation facility.

USA 2005 (September 12th) Washington, Mud Mountain Dam A viewing platform allows you a good look at the dam, along with a sweeping view of the White River Canyon.  This area is home to lots of wildlife, including eagles, owls, heron, beaver, and elk.  Catching a glimpse of them depends on the time of year, and a little bit of luck, but bring your binoculars and you may be fortunate to get a glimpse of some of these native creatures.

There are trails for hiking and mountain biking, including a nature trail that begins at the upper viewing deck and ends at the lower viewing deck, about a quarter mile down the canyon wall.  It’s one ambitious hike, but from the lower platform is a great spot for photographing the dam.  The three and a half mile Rim Trail  and the six and a half equestrian trail are also popular choices.

The recreational area is open year-round and has picnic areas and shelters, slides, swings, wading pool, half court basketball area, along with other playground equipment.  This is a day park, no overnight camping is available.

Bring the kids, friends, a picnic spread, and lots of water, and enjoy some spectacular natural beauty along with a little Washington State history.

Location:  30525 SE Mud Mountain Road, just past Enumclaw (map).  About an hour drive from Seattle.

Hours:  Summer hours are 9 am – 8 pm.  Check the park calendar for your visit date, as days and hours vary based on season.

Admission:  FREE
