Electric Picnic in Ireland

I’m sure after seeing that title some readers were curious as to what exactly an Electric Picnic is. I had this same question, a couple years ago, when the temperature started to rise (somewhat) and there were indications that summer might be arriving soon. As soon as this occurred, the dominating topic of conversations was be Electric Picnic. Soon, I discovered that it is an annual music festival, and one that music fans of all genres hold in high regard.

Music has been an important part of life in Ireland throughout history. Just about any trip you take to the island will have memories of music – from traditional music sessions to acoustic guitar in the pubs. If you have seen this side of the music scene in Ireland, and are looking to experience something even bigger, look into attending Electric Picnic during an upcoming trip to Ireland. This year, the festival takes place from 3 -5 September. A manageable drive from Dublin in County Laois, this festival takes place outside of the city and for three days festival-goers camp between shows, enjoy the countryside, and indulge in concerts of every shape and size. Just don’t expect to get too much sleep – the Irish know how to keep the party going all through the night.

The festival features a variety of music, and the 2010 event has a great lineup. Acts include Modest Mouse, The Frames, Imelda May, The National, and many more. Electric Picnic is also known as more than a music festival, and embraces the arts as well. From poetry to visual art to spoken word, there are many arts represented at the festival affectionately called EP. Be sure to pack along your rubber boots (‘wellies’) because it has been known to get muddy. On the other hand, you never know, and the 2010 festival could be a sunny event after all.

Ticket price: 240 euros for entire 3 day weekend. No single day tickets.
