Mexico in Traditional Dress Exhibition at MAP
The Mexico in Traditional Dress (Mexico Vestido de Tradición) exhibition is currently on display at the Museum of Folk Art (Museo de Arte Popular or MAP) in the historic center of Mexico City. The exhibition features more than 500 traditional outfits worn by the indigenous communities throughout Mexico.
The exhibition is divided into five sections including ritual, fiesta, gala or formal, geographic apparel and play. On display are garments for everyday wear and special occasions in both miniature and actual size.
The Mexico in Traditional Dress exhibition aims to raise awareness and help preserve the history, customs and rituals of Mexico’s indigenous groups.
The collection was created by Maria Esther Echeverria Zuno and is part of a collaboration of the Cultural Area of San Jeronimo and the Museum of Folk Art. The garment displays are supplemented with pieces of folk art from the museum’s collection. The combination of garments and objects is believed to provide a more complete image of the traditions of the indigenous communities.
The Mexico in Traditional Dress exhibition is scheduled to run through August 1, 2010. The Museum of Folk Art (map) is located at Revillagigedo 11 in the historic center of Mexico City. The closest Metro station is Juarez (map). The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am until 6pm and until 9pm on Thursdays. Admission is MX$40 ($3.20) Tuesday through Saturday and free on Sundays.
