Cool things to do in hot Hawaii

I know when summer has arrived when Diamond Head turns brown and I have to use a fan to keep cool at night.  I love the summertime, but sometimes I just need the comfort of cool shade or even indoor air-conditioning.

Aside from going to the beach and swimming (or surfing), there are lots of great daytime activities that allow to you enjoy the daylight while at the same time keep you cool and comfortable.  Here are a few ideas:

  • Ala Moana Shopping Center [map]: I’m not a shopper myself, but this outdoor mall is a favorite local hangout.  Even though I don’t like shopping, I do enjoy being an occasional people-watcher.  I also just recently discovered the no-longer-new-but-new-to-me Nordstrom wing of the mall!  I really like the fancy lights on the pedestrian walkway!
  • Kalakaua Avenue [map]: You can walk and window shop and, when you get tired, you can make an occasional stop at Burberry’s, for instance — or an ABC Store if you’re on a budget like me.
  • The International Marketplace [map]: I still enjoy occasional strolls under the enormous canopy of Waikiki’s banyan tree.  The little shops along Duke’s Lane sell a little bit of paradise in the form of shell necklaces and other Hawaiian mementos.
  • Pearl Harbor [map]: Aside from the wretched long line to get in, taking the short ferry ride to the Arizona Memorial is a worthy summer activity.
  • Take a Trolley ride or Duck tour: There are several trolley routes that can take you sightseeing to different parts of the island.

If all else fails, put on your swimsuit and jump into the ocean.  Whatever you do, don’t spend all summer inside.  Get out there and enjoy the hot Hawaiian sun!
