Edinburgh Photo Friday: The Hub
It’s Photo Friday and what better time than to take a stroll down the Royal Mile for today’s picture postcard shot: The Hub.
The hub looks simply like a beautiful old church, but it’s actually a bustling multi-purpose facility. The gothic spire at the top is Edinburgh’s tallest point (one for your next pub trivia night, folks), and was built by the Church of Scotland between 1842 and 1845. It was a church-owned/related facility in one way or another until 1995, when it was purchased by the Edinburgh International Festival and transformed into what you see today.
Today, It’s…
The Hub has a lot of functions today, including:
- a ticketing office for the Edinburgh International Festival (not to be confused with the Edinburgh Fringe, something entirely different)
- a popular venue for weddings and special events (the interiors are spectacular – possibly one of the few renovations where the historical building came out looking better)
- a cafe popular with tourists popping by for a refreshing during their tromp up or down the Royal Mile (there’s a nice terrace too)
- a concert hall (I’ve only been for one-off exhibitions)
I’m sure I’m forgetting something.
One of the nicests views of The Hub is from the roof of Camera Obscura, its neighbour; it’s close but not too close, so you get a great view of the spire – so be sure to visit for this extra view.
