Santa Monica’s First Historical Museum

Santa Monica Pier

A new museum about one of LA’s finest beach cities is coming this summer, the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum.

The Santa Monica Historical Society has been collecting, preserving, and promoting the history of Santa Monica for over 30 years. Now they wish to display their findings to the public in a new 5,000-square-foot museum. This will be Santa Monica’s first museum that will discuss various topics such as art and culture with historical images and artifacts.

The new museum will provide a research library as well as permanent and changing galleries. The research library will hold early telephone directories, maps, books, photo collections, and other original documents. The permanent gallery will have five themed areas: The Origins, At Work, At Play, In The Headlines, and In The Arts. The At Work display will be about the Santa Monica Douglas Aircraft Company founded in 1921. There will also be information on the Port of Los Angeles battle of the early 1900s and the history of the popular shopping area of Third Street. Interesting features of this permanent gallery will be hands-on interactive exhibits like the virtual roller coaster and a “then and now” touch-screen map of Santa Monica.

Support the new Santa Monica Historical Museum and donate today. Donations of $500 or more will grant you recognization on the Wall of Legacy displayed in the museum’s lobby.
