Ecobici Bicycle Sharing

As part of Mexico City’s Green Plan (Plan Verde) the city is introducing several new initiatives to combat pollution and traffic congestion, help improve air quality in the city and reduce carbon emissions.  The Green Plan focuses on seven key areas including habitability and public space, land conservation, water supply, transportation and mobility, waste and recycling, air pollution, and an energy and climate action program.

Ecobici Bicycle Station, Mexico City

One recent initiative is the Ecobici bicycle sharing program operating in downtown Mexico City.  Bicycles are available for short commuter trips and riders can borrow a bicycle from one station and return it to any of the other stations.  The city is also working to introduce additional bicycle lanes and infrastructure while expanding on those that already exist.

There are currently 85 Ecobici stations located throughout the Cuauhtémoc (map), Juárez (map), Roma (map) and Condesa (map) neighborhoods of the city.  A detailed map identifying each of the stations is available online.  Each station is strategically placed no more than 300 meters from the next ensuring that riders can easily locate the closest station.

The bicycle sharing program is a great way for environmentally conscious commuters to travel throughout the downtown area.  Program participants must purchase an annual membership card for MX$300 ($24).  There is no additional cost to borrow bicycles for periods of 30 minutes or less.  The cost is MX$10 ($0.80) for rides of 30 minutes to one hour and MX$35 ($2.80) for an additional hour.  Riders are only permitted to borrow the bicycles for  a maximum of two hours at a time.
