The concert will also have the Indian classical dance form called Kathak, which usually accompanies any Tabla event. The Indian artists performing are:

  • Tabla duet by Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa & Shariq Mustafa
  • Flute duet by Rajendra Prasanna & Rajesh Prasanna
  • Kathak recital by Jayant Kastuar

Before you rush to see the concert, here is a little about this Indian Musician and about the Indian Musical Instrument called Tabla.

About Ahmed Jan Thirakwa

In 1892, he was in a small North Indian town of Moradabad, which is in the Uttar Pradesh state. At the age of 12, this Indian Musician learned to play the Tabla. His last name means “to shimmer”. It isn’t his real last name, rather a name given to him because his fingers seem to shimmer over the Tabla. The resultant music will…well…leave you shimmering with joy. Thirakwa was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1954[1] and the Padma Bhushan in 1970.

About the Tabla

This Indian Musical instrument comprises of a pair of hand drums of different sizes and timbres. The name of this Indian Musical Instrument is derived from an Arabic word – tabl – that means to drum. The players of the Tabla use their fingers and palms to create a wide variety of different sounds. Artists force the heel of the hand to apply pressure or in a sliding motion to change the pitch.
