The Return of Captain EO
In February, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California reintroduced park guests and Michael Jackson fans to an attraction it had retired in 1998, Captain EO. The musical spectacular had thrilled Disneyland guests from 1992-1998 and shortly after the death of Jackson, was brought back to the park as a tribute.
Due to the overwhelming response at the California park (map), Captain EO will return this summer to Disneyland Paris (map), Walt Disney World (map) and Tokyo Disneyland Resort (map) allowing new audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3D production. Captain EO was a rare big-screen performance by “The King of Pop”.
Produced by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this groundbreaking 17-minute, 3-D film was filmed 23 years ago, at the height of Michael Jackson’s phenomenal musical career. In addition to Jackson, the feature includes Academy Award-winning actress, Anjelica Huston and a cast of mythical space characters who transform into Jackson’s electronic band.
Through the 3-D process, Jackson will seem to dance off the screen and into the theater, just as before, yet, the film will look and sound better than when originally released due to advancements in technology. One thing that will never change is the brilliance of Jackson’s musicality.
For those who have forgotten, or may have never seen Captain EO, here is a little refresher. In the story, EO and his crew discover a colorless planet and are confronted by its Supreme Leader (Huston) and her forces of darkness. Using the power of music and dance, the merry gang fill the planet, and ultimately the theater, with light and all the shades of the rainbow and turn it into a world of color and happiness.
Captain EO will be arriving at each of the Disney Parks on different dates throughout the summer and will be presented multiple times daily.
