DRAW Exhibition Opening in Mexico City
The DRAW exhibition tour is making its way to Mexico City. After originally opening in New York City’s Fuse Gallery in 2006 the exhibition has shown in Gallery Lombardi in Austin, Texas during the 2007 SXSW Festival , in Stolen Space Gallery in London, England in March of 2008 and most recently in Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, California.
The Museum of Mexico City (Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico) will host the exhibit which is scheduled to open on Saturday June 19th and run through Sunday August 15th, 2010.
In addition to hosting the DRAW exhibition, the Museum of Mexico City showcases the history of Mexico City through models, maps and displays which focus on the Zocálo and its historic role as a staging ground for Mexican social movements. The former studio of Mexican impressionist artist Joaquín Clausell is located on the upper level of the museum.
As stated in the Fuse Gallery press release,
“DRAW is the largest contemporary drawing exhibition to emerge out of New York City. It is a must-see art exhibition featuring original drawings by more than 350 artists in the illustration, graffiti, tattoo, literature, design, animation, skateboard, music, psychedelic art worlds. The show is a tribute to the often-underrated but fundamental building block of visual and graphic art: the drawing.”
A select group of Mexican contemporary artists have been invited to submit their work to DRAW and the work will remain as part of the exhibition as it travels to cities around the world including Tokyo, Paris, Milan, Vienna, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Berlin – all of which are upcoming stops along the DRAW exhibition world tour.
The Museum of Mexico City (map) is located at Pino Suárez 30 just off Plaza de Jesus in the city’s historic center. The closest Metro station is Pino Suárez (map). The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. General admission to the museum is MX$20 ($1.60) and admission is free on Wednesdays.
