Exotic Madrid: Indulge in an Arabic Bath

arabic bath, madridIn the midst of cosmopolitan Madrid, it’s hard to imagine an oasis like Medina Mayrit(map) exists. With gushing fountains, an ancient Arabic decor and mellow Sufi music in the background, it brings you into a different world – one of harmony and tranquility.

Literally translated to mean City of Madrid, Medina Mayrit is specially designed to resemble Al Andalus, a mixture of Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures. This magical concoction is now manifested through candle-lit chambers, aromatic setting and the light trickle of water at Medina Mayrit. This is a place of rest and religion, as well as social and political meeting.

Traditional Hammam Bath

Medina Mayrit’s traditional hammam rests beneath the arches of an underground cistern. Beautifully decorated in Arabic Mudejar style, the Arabic bath exudes a soothing ambiance perfect for visitors to completely unwind. In the past, hammams were not only used for bathing rituals but also for religious purpose. The layout of the hammam today also serves to enhance its therapeutic functions. In addition to a standard hammam bath, you can also enjoy a massage or aromatherapy. The house speciality here is the Al Andalus ritual massage.

Exquisite Restaurant

After the rejuvenating bath, it’s time to recharge with some authentic Al Andalus cuisine. Fusing flavors from Christian, Arabic and Jewish cultures, the dishes served here are evocative of old Andalus recipes. You can pamper yourself with the 1001 Nights menu, that comes at a hefty price of 39euros. This includes 2 starters, a meat or fish main course, dessert and tea. Drinks are not included.

This evening menu is accompanied by a traditional dance performance. Besides the quintessential belly dance, you’ll only be treated to a wide variety of Arabic dances, including the sabre and darbuka dances. Check the restaurant’s website for detailed prices and monthly show schedule. For evening programs, call +34 902 333 334 to book in advance.

At lunch hour on weekdays, the restaurant offers an affordable lunch menu at 12euros (except public holidays). This includes a starter, a main dish from 3 different choices, a drink and have a tea or a coffee. Dessert is not included.

Teahouse

An Arabic teahouse, also known as teteria, always promises an alluring ambiance, to set you in the mood for romance. The teahouse here is no exception, with a tasteful Arabic decor and a modern twist. Help yourself to a wide range of infusions, teas and Moorish snacks.
