Indian Folk and Tribal Dance Festival
A 7-day National Assembly of Young Artists from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi has been kicked off on May 17th. The Indian Folk dance festival showcases some of India’s traditional and performing arts. Every region of India has its own style of folk and tribal dance. Each Indian Folk dance style has only one purpose – an expression of joy. Usually, the Indian folk dance steps are simple and don’t require extensive practice, which is unlike typical Indian classical dance forms. The costumes are joy to watch.
- Maharastra: This Indian folk dance is called Pavri Nach. It is from the hilly regions of the state. The dance is accompanied with a wind instrument made of dried gourd. Men and women dance separately.
- Rajasthan: This Indian folk dance is called Kalbelia. The dance movements bear resemblance of snakes. The musical instrument that accompanies this dance form is called a Been (usually associated with Snake Charmers).
- Chhattisgarh: There are several Indian folk dance styles from this region. Some of them are Panthi and Raut Nacha. The dances usually have spiritual and religious meanings.
- Gujarat: The most well-known India dance style from this region is called Garba and Raas. The usage of sticks is common.
- Madhya Pradesh: Typical Indian folk dances from this region are Tertali, Charkul, and Jawara. People dance the Jawara after a hood harvest.
