Visiting the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum
The day started with a phone call at 5:30 a.m., and finally ended at 11 p.m., after
meetings, briefings and so much more. I would be lying if I didn’t say it an extremely full day. In fact, so much was going on and needed my attention, I almost couldn’t keep up. However, before I moved on, I just wanted to ask one question.
How does the President of the United States do this everyday?
No, I’m not in D.C., but am standing the the middle of the multi-media exhibit “A Day in the Life of the President” at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum (map). While touring the space, I’m following the enormous screens that show it was like for on December 11, 1978.
Located about two miles east of downtown, the museum walks you through the life and works of the 39th President of the United States. Not missing a beat, the exhibits cover everything from his humble beginnings in Plains, Ga., to his post-presidency activities. You’ll see such things as the periscope similar to the one he handled during his time as a navy submariner, artifacts from his campaigns and exhibits that provide an look into key issues of his presidency, such as relation with China and the Panama Canal Treaty. There are also cases showcasing the many State gifts as well. You can even walk into the exact replica of the Oval Office.
In the post-presidency wing (relatively new to the museum; the museum closed in 2009 for renovations), you discover an interactive table that allows you to travel with Carters to see all of their humanitarian works around the world. On display is the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the Medal of Freedom and other honors.
The experience doesn’t end in the museum. Step outside to enjoy the eight gardens. There is everything from the Japanese Gardens, designed by a Japanese Master Gardener to the Rose Garden that includes the orange Rosalyn Carter.
Did You Know…
The museum is located on the hill where General Sherman watched the Battle of Atlanta.
