Shark Week Surfaces at Birch Aquarium

Soak up an entire week dedicated to sharks this summer at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.   Shark Week runs July 17-23 and features a week of hands-on exploration for all ages into the world of these mesmerizing and misunderstood ocean predators.

Meet local leopard sharks and their relatives.  Discover why sharks are vulnerable and must be protected.  Explore how sharks use their teeth the way humans use utensils.  Learn from Scripps Oceanography scientists about research discoveries and conservation efforts that may help sustain declining shark populations.

Shark Week activities run from 11am – 3pm daily and are included with Birch Aquarium admission.  The week long activities include:

  • Live shark encounters tied to hourly presentations about these amazing predators
  • Dive shows in the two-story kelp forest tank with a special shark focus
  • More than 10 species of sharks and their relatives on display
  • Shark scavenger hunts with a toothy prize
  • “Great White” photo booth

Birch Aquariums is a public exploration center perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  The aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of  Mexico and the Caribbean.
