Sail Off Into the Sunset
During the warm weather months, Boston’s waterways from the Charles River to Boston Harbor are busy with all types of pleasure craft.
If you like the feel of the wind at your back, check out Community Boating (21 David Mugar Way) (Map), America’s oldest and largest public summer sailing program. If you are an experienced sailor, you can take advantage of a one-day sail pass that includes a small sailboat rental for just $75.
If you are feeling ambitious, you and your crew can learn to row along the Charles River at Charles River Canoe and Kayak (Soldier’s Field Rd., Allston)which rents canoes, rowboats, and kayaks by the hour.
And of course, if you would rather sit back and let someone else be captain, you can board one of many cruise boats that ply Boston’s waterways. New England Aquarium and Boston Harbor Cruises both offer whale watch excursions from April-October. Another option? The Harbor Express Cruise departs from Long Wharf and visits Georges Island, home of a historic Civil War fort.
