Cinco de Mayo Festivities
You must know the song by now: “Uno de enero, dos de febrero, tres de marzo, cuatro abril…” Or maybe the only Spanish song you know is “La Cucaracha” (which literally means “The Cockroach”). Either way, today is the fifth of May – or “Cinco de Mayo” as they say in Mexico, which means it’s time to party!
Cinco de Mayo celebrations are limited to the state of Puebla in Mexico and the United States and it’s actually not even a federal holiday in Mexico! The day celebrates the Mexican army’s victory against the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This day does not signify Mexico’s independence, but is more of a world celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
Despite the reason behind Cinco de Mayo Honolulu residents love to celebrate this day with Mexican food, margaritas, tequila, music, dance, and fun. Here are the Cinco de Mayo events that are going on in Honolulu tonight and later this week:
- : Tonight @ 6-10 pm on Nu’uanu and Hotel Street []. Food, Music, & Dance, and free for all ages
