The Toronto-Niagara Bike Train

The Toronto-Niagara Bike Train is a relatively new development in Niagara, as it was launched in 2007.  The Bike Train is essentially a program that sees bike racks installed on certain passenger rail trains. There are several different Bike Train Routes all throughout Ontario, and one of the most popular is the Toronto-Niagara Greenbelt Express.

Train travel between Toronto and Niagara is about an hour and a half (when you factor in stops). The trains goes from Toronto’s Union Station (map) to the Niagara Falls Station (map), with numerous stops in St. Catharines as well. The Niagara Falls Station is ideally located, as there is easy access to some really great riding trails such as the Niagara River Recreation Trail. One way on this trail leads through Niagara Falls and the Niagara Gorge, and the other way will take riders to historic Niagara on the Lake.

The Bike Train between Toronto and Niagara only runs on weekends from May 21st until September 26th, and each train usually has two designated coaches, which can carry up to 18 bikes each.  Spaces on the Bike Train can not be reserved.  Tickets can be bought at all Go Train Stations, and cost $19 per person. Family passes are also available. The trains to Niagara run several times a day on the weekends, and the full schedule can be viewed here.

Both Niagara and Toronto have some great cycling trails, so the Bike Train offers a great opportunity for residents of both cities (as well as tourists), to experience some outdoor fun in Ontario.

Some great cycling routes are available for download on the Cycling in Niagara website. This website also has some great cycling itineraries available for people, and there are itineraries available for every possible schedule, from two hours to two days.
