It’s May in the South
Summer may just be around the corner, but during the month of May, fun times in
the South are all ready here.
So, this month why don’t you…
- celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Be part of the festivities in such destinations as Florissant, Mo., (May 7-8), San Antonio (May 5), or Myrtle Beach, S.C. (May 8).
- visit gardens during National Public Gardens Day on May 7. Spend time walking along the flowers and plants at Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile, Ala., Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Fla., or Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont, N.C.
- learn all about trains on Train Day, May 8. There’s activities and more happening at places like Guthrie Santa Fe Depot in Guthrie, Okla., Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff, Vines Garden Railroad in Loganville, Ga., or Historic Rail Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
- honor mom for Mother’s Day. Do something fun with her. Luckily in the South, you won’t have a problem finding anything to do.
- go to a festival (or two or three). Choose from the Crawdad Music Festival in Harrison, Ark., May 14-15; MainStrasse Village Maifest in Covington, Ky., May 14-16; Battle of Lewisburg (WVa.), May 21-23; or Freedom Weekend Aloft in Simpsonville, S.C., May 28-31.
- get outdoors. Go geocaching. Fly through the trees as you try ziplining.
- take a road trip. Pack up the car and head toward Montgomery, Ala., Roswell, Ga., Raleigh, N.C., or Jacksonville, Fla.
