Arguably the Best Taqueria in Boston: El Pelon

At last, El Pelon is back! After closing its Fenway location because of a fire that burnt it to the ground in early 2009, El Pelon has recently reopened in new digs in Brighton, practically in the shadow of Boston College.

Over the years, El Pelon had developed a cult-like following among local taco aficionados for its fresh, authentic Mexican fast food.  The cornmeal fried fish tacos, tacos pescados($6.50) have always been- and still are- the thing to get here. El Pelon uses cod  and they don’t skimp. Topped with  pickled cabbage, limed onions, cucumbers and chile mayo, it is practically gourmet. Another worthwhile choice are the tacos americanos ($5.50); two grilled chicken tacos with fresh salsa, cheese, sour cream and lettuce.  The “El Guapo burrito ( $6.50 ); grilled steak, rice, black beans, cheese,  fired -roasted salsa and fried plantains in a flour tortilla is numero uno among local college guys with big appetites. And late night when you need a quick Mex fix, you can dig into warm, fresh nachos ,salsa, and guac for just $4.50.

Because it is very good and very reasonable, El Pelon can be crowded. There is a small seating area and a bar counter, but your best bet is to go early or go late, especially on weekends.
