Two New Experiences to Rediscover Florida’s Gulf Islands

For many travelers, all it takes is some new experiences to rediscover a destination.

And if you think you’ve seen all there is to see of Florida’s Gulf Islands, take in the view from either horse surfing or a Segway tour. Chances are you’ll walk away with a whole new look at the destination.

“It’s a cool, fun thing to do,” says Tim Mattox, owner of Great World Nature Tours horse surfing (map) in Bradenton. “You can go horseback riding on the beach nearly anywhere in the world, but horse surfing is a little more adventurous. It’s all about being out in the water with the horse.”

Taking place along Palma Sola Bay, the experience begins with a trot along the beach and ends with a swim as riders are still seated atop their horse.

Mattox says the ride occur at low tide “or very close to low tide,” so not only is there a wide beach to ride on, but also the right depth of water to take the horses in.

Great World Nature Tours works to customize each experience, as well as keep both the horses and guests safe at all times. Nearly everyone can participate. In fact, children as young as three up to seniors can enjoy horse surfing.

In addition to horse surfing, they also offer trails rides and private rides.

Located on Bradenton Beach, the company was started by a relative newcomer to the area, Becky Kramer, who wanted a business that would entertain people and allow her to be outdoors. So, after reading about how big tourism is on the island and realizing that no one else offered Segway tours, it was the perfect business to start.

The tour is around an hour and half, and covers about six-and-a-half miles. It is a guided tour that opened to people, ages 14 and older. Training is provided prior to the actual tour.

Kramer says the tour motors along  such places as historic Bridge Street, Coquina Beach, Long Boat Pass and more.

“Everyone has the best time,” she says. “People are always telling us it’s the best experience on the island.”
