Honolulu AIDS Walk: Sunday, April 18
Kapiolani Park [map] will be the site of the Honolulu AIDS Walk today, Sunday, April 18 @ 9 a.m. Thousands of individuals and teams will gather at the park for a 5 kilometer walk to benefit the Life Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and research. Since opening its doors as Hawaii’s first AIDS organization in 1983, Life Foundation has been implementing innovative programs such as AIDS case management, school based AIDS education, the sterile needle exchange, peer support for positives, treatment education and peer-to-peer HIV prevention outreach.
The Honolulu AIDS Walk begins at 9 a.m. and registration is free. Individuals or teams that raise $100 or more get a free T-shirt and hat. Following the walk, there will be food booths and entertainment including Talk to You Music, Kings of Spade and Elephant, plus hula and a kid zone. There will also be free rapid HIV testing on hand at the event.
This year, I will be participating in the walk as part of my school’s team. Earlier this week we hosted a movie night featuring “Philadelphia” and a raffle. We were able to raise $185 dollars. It was a successful effort for a good cause.
