Former PlanetEye Global Nomad makes shortlist for Ultimate Job Competition
One of our very own travel writers has beaten out 30,000 applicants to make the shortlist for what might be the ultimate travel job: Honeymoon Tester.
Following the success of the “Ultimate Job in the World” contest last year in Australia, Irish travel agency RunawayBrideAndGroom.com launched the latest in a spate of dream job competitions: six months traipsing the globe, being paid to test out the world’s most romantic wedding and honeymoon locations.
The top-voted North American entrants, newlyweds Brendan Powell and Melanie Piché beat out tens of thousands of video entries to make the list of 50 finalists. Contestants’ 80-second videos are open to public voting until April 17th, when the field further narrows to 10 couples; the video with the most votes wins an automatic bye to the final round. The winner is chosen by a panel of judges and will be announced at a gala dinner in Dublin, Ireland at the end of April.
Also sponsored by the Irish Times, the grueling assignment involves blogging about luxury resorts as well as writing monthly newspaper articles for the Times. Proposed locations include Zanzibar, Kenya, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Maldives, Thailand, Jordan, Hawaii and naturally, Ireland.
PlanetEye readers will remember Brendan’s year-long stint reporting as our Global Nomad blogger, as he and Melanie traveled around the Americas and Mediterranean, turning his veteran travel tour guide eye and camera lens on the cultures he passed through.
“It feels as though I’ve been training for this job my entire life,” says Brendan, a veteran travel tour guide and freelance writer/photographer. “Maybe my wife will finally see some tangible benefit to all the years I spent on the road.”
The young company boasts that the viral campaign has drawn millions of euros in publicity and attracted over 10 million hits to their site.
