Phoenix Coyotes Roll Out the White Carpet

The Phoenix Coyotes have had a tough year; filing for bankruptcy, sweating out a possible move from Phoenix and now a new coach.  This is how I started out my post on November 16, 2009 to announce a new East Valley Fan Shuttle to their games.  Well, I’m happy to report that their tough year has paid off because they’ve made it to the NHL playoffs!

Greg Beacham, a sports writer for the Arizona Republic, said it best, “Nobody expected much of anything out of this beleaguered franchise this season, yet the Coyotes have sneaked up on the rest of the NHL all the way to a nifty 50 wins.”

They’ve got home field advantage in their first playoff game that looks as if it will be against the LA Kings.  To stay on top of their standings check out a great fan blog at Fanster.com.  Or to show your true support, grow a beard.  Yes, that’s right fans are encouraged to grow their own playoff beards beginning April 14 in support of Coyotes Charities.  They’re even giving prizes to the top fundraisers who raise the most pledges.  Here’s more information about the Coyotes Beard-A-Thon.

Even though I have to admit that I’m a bit of a fair-weather fan, the Coyotes have always intrigued me. It all started when I bought my husband a “Hockey for Dummies” book in response to him buying us season tickets.  I really enjoy basketball, football and baseball, but I’m not a big hockey fan.  During my first game I had no idea what was going on and could never keep up with the puck. But, I was thoroughly entertained by the crowd especially when there was a fight either on the ice or in the stands.  At my second game I still had no idea what was happening, but they had good nachos so I kept going back.  I’ve never forgotten them and try to support them when I can.
