Zenit: Become A Fan

Unlike European countries and USA, in Russia national football (soccer) championship, which serves as a main country’s entertainment, starts in early March.

Unlike Moscow, where there are a few very strong teams playing in the highest Premier league, St. Petersburg has the only such collective — FC Zenit.  As a single child in a family it is getting all the love and fan support which is being produced by a forth-biggest city in Europe and its outskirts.

In 2008, Zenit won the UEFA Cup (after beating the Glasgow Rangers) and then the Super Cup in a game against Manchester United itself. For many locals Zenit is a religion, so you’ve got to be involved if you want to feel yourself a resident of St. Petersburg.

How to do it. First of all, buy a pair of souvenirs or other items with Zenit’s logo: a T-shirt, a ball, a pen, a scarf anything what’s for sale in numerous Zenit’s shops and kiosks around the city. You can find them at

the Sennaya Square,

Suvoroskiy prospect, 61 (the first and biggest shop),

airport Pulkovo-1,

Moskovskiy railway station.

Secondly, visit a home game, the next will take place on April, 7 against Volga (quarter-final of the Cup) and then on April, 11 against Lokomotiv. The stadium is located at the Petrovsky island, the nearest metro station is Sportivnaya. Tickets are best to buy at ticket-offices at the stadium, I think, $30-50 will be enough for you to get a good seat.

Do not forget that for some games ticktets are being sold out long before the competition!  Visiting teams to attract the greatest interests are Spartak, CSKA, Dynamo, Lokomotiv and Rubin.

Important: this autumn Zenit plays in the Europe’s  Champions League. St. Petersburg is waiting for grands. And for vistories, of course!
