Meet the Neighbours at Sydney Council BBQs

While popular soap operas try to convince us otherwise, few of us live in a neighbourhood like Summer Bay or Erinsborough. While many of us may feel disconnected living in Sydney and its suburbs, the local council wants to help bridge the gap.

In May, the City of Sydney will host Good Neighbourhood BBQs during the next few months to help residents meet one another, local police, and staff from the Safe City program. You’ll also learn more about improvements planned for your local area and discuss any safety and security issues you may have with the powers that be.

While that might sound a bit heavy, the emphasis is on fun. There’ll be free grub and live music, and activities for the kids including performance by the Erth Dinosaur Petting Zoo.

“We know that the safest communities are those where people get to know each other, say hello to one another, collect their neighbour’s mail when they are away and reach out to each other,” explained Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

“Initiatives like the Good Neighbourhood BBQ Program encourage a sense of belonging and trust within our local communities and create a safe, friendly and more connected city of villages,” said Ms Moore.

Good Neighbourhood BBQ Programs will be held from 11 am to 2 pm in the following parks.

21 March 2010 – Foley Park, corner Pyrmont Bridge and Glebe Point Roads, Glebe
28 March 2010 – Lillian Fowler Reserve, corner Harold and Gowrie Streets, Erskineville
31 March 2010 – Waterloo Green, Raglan St, Waterloo
11 April 2010 – Turruwal Park, Harcourt Parade, Rosebery
18 April 2010 – South Sydney Rotary Park, cnr Explorer St and Railway Parade, Alexandria
21 April 2010 – Poet’s Corner, Morehead Street, Redfern
2 May 2010 – The Paddock, Pottinger Street, Millers Point
