Vineyards of the Cape, South Africa

Dating back to the 17th century, South Africa has been internationally recognized as a leader in the production of fine wines, particularly the Constantia variety. With production concentrated in Cape Town, the vineyards themselves are sprinkled throughout the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Worcester vineyard and production centers.

During the days of Apartheid, wine was considered as a white man’s liquor and was therefore unavailable for sale to the black community; however these rules were never enforced on the colored population from fear of losing the vineyard labor force. It wasn’t until the 1960′s that these Apartheid rules were lifted and the South Africa Wine Farmer Association’s regimented ownership rights were loosened.
