Market by Jean Georges
Talk about a two-fer. When the much anticipated W Hotel (finally!) arrived in , so too did Market, by acclaimed Michelin-starred chef and restaurateur Jean Georges Vongerichten. Since its opening last fall, Market has proven to be a noteworthy newcomer to the restaurant scene with a stylish setting, stellar service, and flat- out fabulous food.
Market excels in featuring simple dishes with nuanced flavors that span French, Italian and Asian cuisines .The black truffle pizza with fontina cheese and frisee ($15) is totally modern luxe. Adore artisanal eats? Order the warm goat cheese custard with beets and pistachios ($10). The butternut squash soup with mushrooms and chives ($9) is lovely -and surprise!- poured into your bowl table side. For mains, the soy-glazed short ribs with apple jalapeno puree ($25) is an imaginative take on a comfort food classic. In a nod to New England’s seafaring heritage, you will find dishes like Casco Cod with shimeji mushrooms ($20) and Georges Bank haddock with parsnip puree and mint($21). Jean-Georges devotees will be pleased to find that many of his signature dishes – including his fois gras brulee ($18), the sea scallops with carmelized cauliflower and caper raisin emulsion ($14), and the parmesan-crusted organic chicken ($19) are on the menu in as well.
Don’t leave without trying dessert. The passion fruit souffle with caramel sauce and ginger ice cream ($8) is divine and is an exceptionally pretty dish. The creme fraiche cheesecake ($8) is memorable, served with cherry compote and a side of cherry sorbet.
You can love that Market is dedicated to using in-season, locally sourced ingredients. And you can really love that for a Theatre District eatery (that is located in a hotel no less!) the prices are down-to-earth.
