Celebrate St. Patty’s Day Lower Greenville Style

Dallas has a tradition of doing St. Patrick’s Day up big with the annual parade and after parties. Whether you are a genuine Irishman (or woman) or just enjoy the green beer and festivities, there is plenty of fun for everyone.

This year Dallas will be hosting the Dash Down Greenville 5K Run and Fun Walk prior to the parade for those who want to warm up for the day’s festivities. The event begins and ends at the Central Market on the corner of Greenville Avenue and Lover’s Lane (map) at 8:30am. Registration is $25 and benefits the North Texas Food Bank.

The 31st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held rain or shine Saturday March 13th at 11am. The parade begins at the corner of Greenville and Park Lane (map) and ends at SMU Boulevard. Spectators can expect to see outrageous floats, outlandish costumes, and many surprises, as this year’s judging contest entries range from themes such as “Best of the Best” to “Most Irish Animal.” There were over 100,000 attendees to the parade last year and this event is often hailed as the Dallas version of Mardi Gras.

The parade is over around noon and spectators head a few blocks south to celebrate. The Dallas Observer’s St. Partick’s Day Party is held off of Yale and Greenville Avenue (map). This year’s performers include The Old 97’s, 1100 Springs, The Drams, and The O’s.

About a mile further south (map), The Granada Theater will be hosting an after party with Dallas’ Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights. Other bands in the lineup include Fever in the Funkhouse, Topaz and Mudphonic, RTB2, Aton, Melody Memory, Green Seeds, Ugly Lion, Soulhat, David Garza, and Phil Pritchett & the Full Band.

Even though an electrical fire consumed 4 bars and restaurants last week in the heart of where the Block Party is held, the after-parade festivities will continue. The block party is located a few blocks south of the Granada between Stan’s Blue Note and Blue Goose (map) and will have DJ booths at both entrances. If you don’t make it to the Block Party before 2pm it is usually already at capacity and they turn people away. It generally winds down around 6pm when most people are done for the day and head home.
