Chicago’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Chicago has a long history of Irish culture with its huge Irish population; almost an Irish pub on every corner; and also one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the United States.

This year Chicago kicks off its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 13 starting at noon. (Reminder: Watch the Chicago River be dyed green that day at 10:45 a.m.)

The parade, which you might recognize from the Harrison Ford movie The Fugitive, is led by Chicago’s Mayor Richard M. Daly and runs along  Columbus Drive.

For a spectator, the parade never disappoints with its floats, marching bands, and of course bagpipers. You might also see a politician or two walking in the parade, although it is unlikely President Obama will come back for it, but you never know.

The parade starts in Grant Park at Balbo Avenue and Columbus Drive and heads north on Columbus to Monroe. The viewing stand is located on Congress Drive by Buckingham Fountain.

Tip: It’s best not to drive to the parade. Public transportation buses run along Michigan Avenue, which is close to Grant Park. There are also EL train stops on State Street. If you do drive, plan to park your car in one of Millennium Park’s underground garages as street parking will be hard to find.

F.Y.I.: In lieu of the annual South Side Irish Parade, which has been canceled for this year, is the South Side Irish Parade Family Fest that will include activities such as an Irish soda bread contest; a best-dressed “Irish” dog contest; and a children’s parade around the Beverly Art Center’s grounds. Admission to the festival is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors. Children 12 and under are free. After 4:00 p.m., admission will be $25.00 per person. To purchase tickets in advance, contact the Beverly Arts Center at 773-445-3838.
