Wee Guide to Edinburgh on Your iPhone
If you’re looking for a guide to Edinburgh on your iPhone app, I’ve got a great suggestion for you: the [iTunes link], released late last fall. It’s half travel guide and half walking tour, covering all of the major sights of the city. Here’s an example of the map:
You can click to find out more about a particular location (the pins) and there’s over 60 different map views.
Some of my favourite things is the “now and then” maps that it offers, giving you a transition from Auld Reekie to modern Edinburgh. It really brings to life some of Edinburgh’s historical aspects. Here’s a few screenshots:
The photos are very good quality and offer such a fun perspective on the city; who needs a tour guide with this fantastic app? The stories are quite accurate as well – such as details about the trams on Princes Street (you can see one above), though the guide has thankfully steered clear on the modern trams debate.
You can use your GPS to follow along on the location maps. If you want to avoid roaming fees, you can choose the locations from a drop down table view (which doesn’t require a network location).
How to Download
The app is only £1.19 ($1.99 for US users, I believe but can’t confirm from here!) and available directly from the iTunes store by searching for ‘Edinburgh wee guide’ – or alternatively, access it directly .
The guide was built by Glasgow-based web design firm iSpy.
