Reel Magic in Sedona

For movie buffs and lovers of independent films, the Sedona Film Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.  In its 16th year, the festival named “Fest to Impress” by MovieMaker Magazine will host a great selection of films, celebrities and directors.

Two preview nights on Sunday and Monday, Feb. 21 and 22 will kickoff the celebration. Then get your popcorn, raisinets and soda in order to enjoy over 140 films in a variety of genres from features to shorts, documentaries, animation and foreign films over the next six full days.

Oscar-winning director Michael Moore will attend and present his first film “Roger & Me,” which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, “Sicko” and his most recent critically-acclaimed film “Capitalism:  A Love Story.”  As the festival’s honoree, the outspoken and sometimes controversial filmmaker will host film discussions, filmmaker chats and more.

Other celebrities include Robert Osborne, the host of Turner Classic Movies will introduce three classic films, “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (1938) with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland; one of my favorites “A Place in the Sun” (1951) with Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters; and Leave Her to Heaven” (1945) with Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde and Vincent Price.  Tim Daly formerly of the television show “Wings” will introduce Barry Levinson’s latest award-winning documentary, “Poliwood” which features a stat-studded cast of celebrity political activists.  Connie Stevens will attend and present her directorial debut “Saving Grace B. Jones.”  Here is a complete listing of all the movies.

Harkins Sedona Six Theatres (map) is the host venue along with boutique theaters Sedona Rouge and Studio Live.  A Family Fun Series hosts films and events appropriate for children and the Sedona Green series will feature films and workshops on sustainability and films that focus on the importance of the planet.

If you’d like to make the weekend out of the film festival, and why not, here is a listing of hotels in the area.

The selected films for this festival seem to rival some of the best around the country.  If nothing else, Sedona is the perfect backdrop for any event with its stunning scenery, boutiques and restaurants.
