The Four Host First Nations Presents a 2010 Spectacular Fashion Showcase

If you’re in Vancouver celebrating the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, be sure to visit the Aboriginal Artisan Village and Business Showcase at Vancouver Community College (1 block from the Aboriginal Pavilion, on the opposite side of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre).  You’ll be amazed at the beautiful original First Nations art and crafts on sale and display here, all part of the Four Host First Nations contribution to the 2010 Winter Games celebrations.

I attended an outstanding fashion show presenting the new collections of three of British Columbia’s top Aboriginal designers,  Angela De MontegnyDorothy Grant, and Pam Baker.  You can see some of their fabulous designs on display in the Artisan Market, including some dazzling jewellery.

Produced by iKANADA Products Incorporated, the fashion show, which presented spectacular contemporary designs, was introduced by Lorne Cardinal, a well-known Canadian Aboriginal actor and TV star (“Corner Gas”) with guest Dr. Evan Adams, also a well-known actor( “Smoke Signals”). Music was arranged by DJ Kwe, one of the few female Aboriginal DJs in Canada.  The audience, besides media, included a number of prominent Aboriginal leaders including  Shawn A-in-chut Atleo, National Chief, a hereditary chief from Ahousht First Nations (see article), Jody Wilson-Raybould, BC Regional Chief  and Jeannette Corbiere Lavall, President of the Native women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and winner of the Governor General’s Award in 2009.

Following this excellent showcase of original fashions, a reception was held with food prepared by culinary chefs, all students of the ‘aboriginal Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College.

There will be a showcase of fashions by emerging Aboriginal design students on Tuesday Feb 16 at 3 pm.
