Plushenko: Congressman and Olympic champion

If I told you that a local legislator (something like a congressman in USA) from St. Petersburg’s parliament is going to win a golden medal at the Olympics in Vancouver, you’d hardly believe me, I think.

But in the case of Evgeni Plushenko it’s so. Being already an Olympic champion (2006 in Turin) and considered as the best figure skating dancer of the current times in the world, he’s travelling to Canada to repeat his success.

As concerns his activity as a legislator, Plushenko currently is on his vacancies.

St. Petersburg is home to Plushenko’s success. Born in the Far East of Russia, he was grown up and became a professional sportsman here. His consistent place of training is the Yubileinyj Sport Palace (pictured below), which is not far from the city’s center and located in a very picturesque district called the Petrogradskaya side.

Here, in the same district, is also a school which Plushenko graduated from in 1998. School number 91 is located in the Vvedenskaya, 3. It’s not worth, of course, visiting only to see a Plushenko’s place, but it’s also very nice around, I mean, first of all, architecture. And it’s not much visited by tourists since this site is somehow falling out of guides.

And, of course, you will not miss the Mariinsky Palace (pictured below) that hosts now the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly, where Mr Plushenko despite his young age is a sort of “congressman”. It is of high importance and responsibility as itself and given the fact that the population of  St. Petersburg is as much as of a European country (5 mln) it means that Plushenko is a man with very wide interests. His constant function here is to work in a comittee on social problems.

Maybe he’s going to become a president? Why not. Not bad idea, after all, Arnold Schwarnegger is doing his job well as a governor of California.  I judge by reading news from Los-Angeles and Orange county.

What is important: the Mariinsky Palace is located just opposite the Isaac’s Cathedral. It’s the very center of the city.
