Happy Anniversary To the Scottish Modern Art Gallery

Join me in wishing the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Happy 50th Anniversary!

Did you know that fifty years ago, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art was the first gallery in Britain opened to focus solely on establishing a collection of modern art.  (It seems young, but I suppose if it’s “modern” art it wouldn’t be that old would it?)  The gallery is a sister to Dean Gallery and over the past five decades the gallery has been doing its best to be a prime piece of real estate in Scotland’s arts scene.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary

The gallery is celebrating the 50th anniversary with a round-up of the collection’s best.  I was there last weekend and it is a stunner, for sure.  From Andy Warhol to Edinburgh locals, the walls are filled with some great pieces to get you thinking.    I really like the way the collections are organised, with simple themes like “dark” which contains piece all very brooding or otherwise, well, dark!

In the Car by Roy Lichtenstein (shown on the brochure clip above) is excellent, but don’t miss Compression by Cesar or the lovely plaster bust called Behold the Boy by Medardo Rosso.

My only complaint is that there is only sculpture and painting.   I would have liked to have seen a little more in the way of multimedia works.  As well it seems the cafe is just not equipped for the high traffic here to see the exhibition – it was a bit of a mess while we were there.  We just headed back to Stockbridge (via the Water of Leith) for a drink and time to reflection on our favourite pieces from the show.

Be sure to check out the gallery on your next visit to Edinburgh; and unless it’s just pouring out, be sure to have a look at the sculptures in the front and side gardens, always a treat.

Don’t miss these 50 facts about the gallery.
