Contest: Your Pet Can Help You Win a Camera
For pet owners, traveling means taking a few extra steps in both the planning and the execution of our travel plans. Just what do you do with Fido or Fluffy when you head out on the road?
I have two adorable cats, Misha (a Siamese Bengal-point) and Socrates (a seal point Siamese). Cats are independent, so leaving them alone for a day or two presents no real problem for them or for me. I hide treats for them to find while I’m away, leave them plenty of food and fresh water, and they are happy to roam the house as they please. I return to appreciative and attentive beasts. It’s a win/win for us.
But, if I’m gone for much longer than that, some real planning comes into play. Do I get someone to house sit for my cats and my home? Do I ask a neighbor or friend to pop over and check on the guys? Or do I pack them off to kitty day care (“cat jail” as I think of it)? Some of you will choose to take your pets on the road with you, but that’s not an option for me.
When it comes to questions about your pets, from food and care, to fun and games, Purina has designed a new “pet hub” called . I’m hoping that we’ll see more pet travel information – and, selfishly, a little more feline friends showing up in the photos – but even as is, it’s a helpful resource for you and your beloved pet.
To convince you to go take a look at their site, petcentric is offering a couple of cool prizes for PlanetEye Traveler readers. You can enter to win one of the following prizes:
- (1) One, Nikon Coolpix 10.0MP Digital Camera
- (1) One, Everyday with Rachel Ray Faves — (Every Day with Rachael Ray tote bag filled with pet-friendly products that have been featured in the pages of Every Day with Rachael Ray Magazine. The approximate retail value (ARV) of is around $40)
Now it’s up to use to decide if you’ll use that camera to take cool pet photos or travel photos, but I’m sure it will come in handy!
Here’s how you enter:
- Leave a comment on this post telling us how you provide for your pets when you’re traveling. And if you have an unbearable adorable photo, leave a link, too!
- If you don’t have a pet, you can still enter. Just head over to petcentric and tell me which of those adorable critters is most like the pet you’d like to have.
- You can gain additional chances to win by following petcentric on or .
- In fact, if you retweet this post and use #petcentric, you’ll get another chance to win (you must use that hash tag so that we can track it).
There are rules, of course:
- The contest is open to US residents only.
- The contest will end at midnight (Pacific Time) on February, 14th, 2010.
- The winners will be notified via email, and if they do not respond an alternate winner will be chosen.
What are you waiting for?! Enter to win now!
NOTE: A big thanks to Purina and petcentric for the prizes for this giveaway.

NOTE: Comments are now closed and the deadline has passed. The winner is being notified and will be announced in an upcoming post. Thanks to everyone who entered.
UPDATE: Both winners have been notified and have responded. Christina from Roanoke, Virgina won the camera, and Jennifer from Hampstead, Maryland won the Rachel Ray goodie bag. Prizes will be sent out to them next week. Thanks to everyone for entering.

We have two cats and my sister-in-law comes and feeds them when we go away.
we have a portable food/water dish that folds up and allows us to feed our dog anywhere.
We take care of our dog when we are traveling by having him stay at the local animal country club. We pay extra for him to have someone spend one on one time with him and also pay extra for him to attend the water park.
What a shame I cannot enter the competition, I am not a US resident. I am a (professional) pet sitter for my son’s three cats. I adore cats, but travel too often and that is not fair on the cats. I’d love to have a cat and have asked one in advance for my 86 birthday, still a long way off. Cats can live to be 16. As it is my intention to celebrate my 100th birthday in the future, my future cat(s) will have a loving home for a long time.
i always take my pets with me, I know where all the good pet friendly hotels are where I like to travel. Lots of places are pet friendly you just have to plan in advance.
heres my cat!
I hire my teenaged neighbor who is ultra mature and reliable, and loves my cat.

Our good friend has her own pet babysitting business, so we hire her to come and look in on our 2 cats, Lewis and Lucky!
We have a senior cat and two kittens. When we need to be away from home, either a friend of ours or my Dad comes over and cares for our babies. Thanks so much.
Our one dog doesn’t travel well – gets car sick, so when we have to travel we hire someone to come and stay at our house with them while we’re gone.
My next door neighbor comes over and cares for our cats and my fish when we travel. She spoils the cats. When we get home there are toys everywhere!

When we travel our dog usually goes to my sister-in-laws home and I have a neighbor come in daily to care for my cat.
When I am traveling. I have my sister or brother come feed and check on my cats every day or two.
My brother lives just 3 houses down from me so they drop by and take care of my baby when we are gone. He has 2 cats (and a dog) so we do the same for him.
We usually dont go anywhere too long and if we do my son takes care of the pets

I take care of neighbors pets when they travel, then neighbors take care of ours when we travel
depends on the trip, and how long I will be gone, 1-3 days I leave extra food and water, more than that I get a pet sitter. I also sometime have my daughter come down from Portland to watch my kitties

my kitty does not like being in the car…we usually leave her at my sister’s house where she is spoiled even more than at home!
I search on-line before the trip and make notes of which places(parks, hotel) are pet friendly.
When I am away my dog goes to visit his Grampa. He spoils him so much with food treats and beer (yes, my dog likes beer) he never wants to come home!
Rocky and Sam go to a kennel that has individual eveiing play time and a bedtime snack dessiemae10@yahoo.com

My Lucky is a pretty independant guy, he roams but not very far and I would never take him on a trip as he would go absolutely bonkers shut up in a carrier or even the car for that matter. When I go away my neighbor and Lucky fan takes daily care of him and he knows to go to her house if his mama is not home. I guess he thinks he has two homes but he comes to this mama’s house to sleep at night.
I hire my two nieces to take care of the cats — the current rate is $5/day each. Much cheaper than taking them to a kennel!
We have a dog and have found an awesome kennel to take her to when we go away. She gets to run and play she loves it. When we say to our dog do you want to go on vacation she gets all excited and jumps in the car. So she goes on vacation too!
I always have my Aunt come stay with my babies when we go away. My boys – Dieter & Bruno (Mini Schnauzers) eat a raw food diet and are spoiled beyond belief, I don’t trust anyone else tot ake care of them. I also have a Parrot, Kiwi, who needs special care – and she, too, is spoiled more than you can imagine! My Aunt loves them just as much as we do and I know they don’t miss us *that* mush, in fact they love their time with Aunt E-taine!
I take my dog with my most of the time when I travel. He gets excited to go for a ride in the car! If I’m unable to take him along, my mom is happy to petsit while I’m away. I just make sure my dog has his bed, food, treats and a favorite toy to keep him happy while I’m gone.
We haven’t traveled since we got our new kittens (we’ve had them a month). We have a littermaid so the cat box is taken care of and we will have our neighbor come to check on food/water and play with them.
Here is a link to our new rescue kitties. We’ve had them for a month now. They sleep touching in some way or another. This time I found them making the shape of a heart :O)

I’m owned by just one beautiful, long haired tortoise shell. Like you, when it’s just a couple of days, I leave her extra food and goodies and she’s fine. Any longer than that and I ask my wonderful neighbor to come daily and feed her and clean her catbox.

I’m lucky, I have a retired neighbor who will look in on my pets and let them out a few times a day. I pay $25 per day for 3 dogs and a cat. Much, much cheaper than boarding and they’re not uprooted.
i am willing to drive and make many stops instead of flying somewhere, just so i know my dog is comfortable
PET SITTER IS WHAT I USE.
We have two dogs, a Poodle and an Airedale and we take them with us when we travel. We have a truck and a travel trailer and the dogs come along. I bring water and food in the truck with us for the dogs and of course we stop often to walk them. Our dogs are an important part of our family and a vacation just wouldn’t be the same without them.

My Westie usually likes to sit in her crate when we first start driving, but she likes to be elevated between the driver and passenger seat so she can see the environment outside. Eventually, she will come out and either sit with whomever is in the passenger’s seat and we make sure to hold on to her just in case.

When I travel, Lucky, my 7 year old Bichon Frise goes to Grandma’s house. He gets to romp around and enjoy his brother, Max who is Grandma’s dog. He gets all the loving, treats and fun a dog can have. I feel very comfortable knowing he is with “family”!!!!
We have two cats, and we always have someone trustworthy take care of them when we’re away.
I have a friend or family member take care of my cat and my cockatiel when I’m gone, and I make sure to reward them with lots of treats when I get back!
If I must leave Pansy the Pug, she stays with my best friend who also has a Pug – They love each other, snuggle together, and fight for the chew bone.
I leave out extra food and water for my dogs and cat when I travel. If I’m going to be gone longer than a weekend, I get my son to check on them. He only lives 10 minutes away.
I have too many pets to try to board them at the vet, so I have a friend who comes by twice a day to play with them and see that they’re taken care of.

Fortunately, we have friends who also have Goldens and they are very happy to watch Emily whenever we travel. We also watched their older Golden who needed a lot of meds and TLC so it is a win-win for everyone!
well, we have 3 cats and 2 dogs (a mastiff and a german shepherd. I usually have my parents come and stay at our house while we are gone. We are actually leaving this weekend and they will stay with our brood.

I have a great vet with an awesome facility with a staff that loves my dogs. They even get pet story time and cuddle time. I hate to leave my dogs but I feel good knowing they are well taken care of.
We get our neighbors to come over and check on our pets when we are traveling.
When my wife and I go on vacation we have a challenge getting our animals taken care of. We have six macaws, two amazons, a cockatoo, a Hawk-headed parrot, as well as six cats. The parrots are all rescue birds and need lots of attention, so not just anyone will do. We are fortunate enough to have a parrot whisperer among our friends so we usually conscript her to take care of the birds and one or two others to help with the cats. In return we take care of their animals when they are gone.
I rarely travel with my pets anymore since I now have seven dogs, 19 sheep, 4 goats, and 8 geese! When I used to travel, I had crates for the dogs to ride in in our mini-van. They always came along and we stayed at pet friendly motels. If my hubbie and I traveled together and it was warm out, one of us would always stay with the van and keep the air conditioning running if the other had to run an errand.

We usually try to take pet-friendly vacations and bring the dogs with us. But, when we can’t bring our 4 Mastiffs – we have my pet-sitter/sister stay at our house.
Our local vet has a great boarding facility and we have the option of getting extra play time. We always get our 2 dogs extra play time together — they have a ball running around together and playing with the toys!
We take care of our neighbors three dogs while they are out of town and they return the favor for our three dogs. You can’t bear good neighbors.

Would love to win!!
My parents live behind me so my dad would come over and feed my cats. Our dog basically stays at thier house and only comes home to eat so he could eat at thier house while we are away.
My cat takes medications twice daily, so even day trips require that I get someone to pop in on her. My best friend has become my go-to cat sitter. (I’ve never boarded my cat; I think it’s too stressful for her.) When I have to leave overnight or longer, he is kind enough to stay at my place to make sure my little furball takes her medicine, eats her food, gets lots o’ loving. He’s definitely a lifesaver!
When my family and I are away, typically, my aunt helps take care of my pets. She stops by every so often to feed my two dogs, cat, and fish. Before she leaves, she gives George – a Rottweiler mix – and Alley – a Miniature Pincher – a brief potty break. If we’re gone for a prolonged period of time, we take them to their favorite doggy/kitty daycares where they always have fun.
‘Tis Georgie during his puppy years!

When you have 2 cats & 5 dogs traveling can be difficult. I’m very lucky to have family members who will come and petsit in my house. If I did not have this option I suppose I would ask and compensate a trusted neighbor to check in on them a couple times a day. No way could I ever board my furbabies.

We leave our dog, Lucy with my parents, they are her “grandparents” so she gets lots of spoiling (treats) along with appropriate discipline. Plus, they know & love her, so she feels secure.
We have house-sitters come in and stay.
If at all possible, I take my little guys with. They get depressed when the are away from me for to long.
If they have to stay behind, my sister watches them so they are still with family.
WHen we travel I put out an extra litter box and bowl of water and food. Then have someone come over every other day to take care of them.

Last year we were gone for four days. I had my mom come over and take care of the hamster and cats. I left my dog with my neighbor, who has a huge fenced in yard! This year, I am not sure what we would do? We just got two new additions to our family. We adopted two new black lab puppies..they were litter mates, and they are such a blessing. We got them when they were 8 weeks old and they now are 12 weeks!

Most of the time when we travel we take our furbabies with us. If for some reason they cannot go, we leave them with my sister who takes excellent care of them.
I take my cat with me whenever possible. Sometimes I leave her at home outside. I live on a farm, far away from the road and my neighbor feeds and waters for me.
We have a wonderful rescued retriever with 3 legs (shot and left in the woods for dead – lay in the snow for approx. 9 days when miraculously found. Since we have a ‘special needs’ furry kid, we search out first floor accommodations for our girl, with a porch whenever possible, and a walking area. We often have to pay an extra fee for animas, but always leave it spotless. We also rented cabins on lakes that provide a comfortable place for Pacho. We have a dwarf bunny, also rescued, and we bought a fold-flat cage that we take for her, along with a baby gate to allow her a specific running area. I put her in a cat carrier for the car. That way, our ‘family’ can all be together when traveling! We love having our pets with us, and they love it, too!
I have three “outside” dogs and one inside dog. Plus three inside kitties. My father-in-law feeds and waters all but the inside dog, who gets to go to an awesome kennel. She has individual playtime at the kennel and I get a personalized photo collage showing Buttons playing and having fun on her “staycation”! It’s hard to leave your pets behind and it does take a little of the fun out of my trips.

We have a friend who watches our Pug when we go out of town. The funny thing is she always thanks us for letting her watch him. She wants a dog of her own but can’t have one due to her current living arrangements. This way she gets her dog fix and we get a sitter.
Normally we send our dogs to a nice boarding place. This is because we like to keep them together, but one of them has “other animal” issues. The boarding places we have gone to in the past have doggie webcams so that we can check on them while we are on vacation.
Generally we leave our anxiety ridden Lhasa Apso with friends, but now we have no friends left

My daughter comes and checks on my cat it I’m gone for a day or two. I have never been gone longer than that since I have a pet. I’m not sure what I would do.
I would really love BEAR by storm2. I can’t have any cats because my husband is allergic. And it’s probably just as well because the kids and I volunteer at a cat shelter and we each have favorites that we’d love to bring home

We’ve only had our puppies for just over one year, so we haven’t traveled much since getting them. However, we have a Doggy Day Care spa & resort nearby that they’ve visited and love it. And we can watch them via wecam – which is a definite plus. So that’s most likely where they will vacation this summer while we go on our planned trip!
I have a dog named rookie a shiz zu. He goes where ever I go whether it is in the car or in the boat.
I’m lucky, my parents will take the cat anytime we won’t be home overnight or for vacation. It is very reassuring.

When I go on vacation, I get my neighbors to come check on my pets daily. I also set out the amount of food to give them for each day, so that they can be given precise amounts when I’m not there

Besides having a special seat cover in the car and food & water for Daisy we plan our trips to the beach by making frequent stops to parks, tourist visitor centers etc. where pets can walk around on leashes for bathroom breaks and to stretch their leggs! Thanks! senekers@comcast.net

The grandparents would move into the house to care for the dog when traveling. Even when we work they come over to keep him company.
Our dog we usually take with us. If not we leave her with friends. Our cat we leave enough food and water out for and have someone check in with him.
Thanks.
I have a loveable Lhasa Apso, Dolce. When I go on vacation, I always make arrangements so that she can come with me. I have not yet encountered a vacation where she would not be in my company.
If we can, we take our two Shit-zus with us. If we need a sitter, I take them three hours away to stay with my daughter and her two dogs.
The kitten in the bowl is adorable!
We drop our dog off at the Kennel when we travel. She loves it because there are so many other dogs there. She’s always horse when we return and sleeps for days.

I have a huge doberman and he stays with his trainer who has known him since he was a puppy while I’m out of town. He gets a lot of play time with other dogs, has his own kennel and toys to play with and comes home freshly bathed and with a new bandana on!
we have a wonderful neighbor who takes care of our little ones
I have 2 grown daughters and I usually travel with just one so the other stays at my place and watchs my 5 furries. If both are traveling with me then I have a neighbor stop in or hire a pet sitter

I have a friend who checks on my cat every day when I am away. She gets fed, watered and played with.
My brother-in-law lives a few doors down and he loves our kitty!! So he comes over each evening and gives my baby his wet food. I also leave several bowels of water and several bowels of dry food—just in case.

I feel very blessed because my dog’s veterinary office also offers great boarding facilities, so my dog stays there if I am out of town. They take great care of him while I’m gone! Thanks.
no pet for me right now. roomate is deathly allergic (or so he claims) to any type of furball. The pet most like the one i would like to have is Bear. Bear reminds me of a cat we had when i was younger and I just want to pet him!

I try not to leave them but if I have to I leave them with my in-laws!
We never travel.
We have one cat and if we leave for a couple of days we have an auto feeder that holds two feedings and is battery operated. Our old vet would board our cat if we left for a week. But she was pissed when we brought her home. Not an ideal situation. Thanks for the giveaway.
When traveling with our pooch we always make sure we have her feeding bowls and one of her toys to take with us
Bear the cat on petcentric is cute.
We take our dogs with us when we visit family and take them in their crates.
I have 2 dogs,we usually go on a vacation once a year,we drive&bring the dogs with us!They love the drive&when they see the beach they love it!

When we travel we usually leave our dog with the neighbors
My mother in law comes by everyday and feed our 2 cats.
We have two Vegas cats: Jackpot and Elvis. I love your suggestion of hiding treats for them when we’re gone. If we’re out of town for more than two nights, a dear friend comes over every two days to feed and cuddle them until we return.
Thanks for the chance to win the camera — I’m sure we’d use it for travel photos and shots of the pets.
When we moved coast-to-coast we took our two cats in the car. One howled literally the entire trek.
When we are gone, we have a vet tech cat sitter come in daily to water, feed, etc. them. This last trip, our Balinese hid so well that the sitter couldn’t find him. He’d found a hole behind a TV where the wires dropped down to the equipment and it was dark and warm. So much for being sociable!
I don’t yet have a pet, but I would love to have a friendly, genial little pup like Ranger “The Happy Boy,” whose cuteness is beyond words! Thanks for the giveaway!

When I have to be gone for the whole day, I sometimes leave a t-shirt for my cat. He likes to curl up in it. I sometimes leave the radio on to keep him company.

I’d love to have Bear! What a sweetheart!
When we go on vacation our cat always goes with us. We travel to Michigan from Florida once a year. Our cat Selena is free to roam the car for our 18 hour drive. We give her a bowl of water and food and she also has her litter box. She is very spoiled. I hate to leave her home, she loves to ride in the car. She is a little nervous to begin with but she gets use to it and then sleeps on our laps. We could not ask for a better pet.
When we gp away for a few days, we will leave our cats at our house with the radio on and try to leave interesting adventure stuff for them throughout the house.
During the late spring, summer and early fall you will find my family in the mountains. Whether we are fishing, hiking or riding the trails our little shihtzu, Kodi, is with us. You would think she is a full sized dog the way she struts her stuff. We keep her fur cut shorter than the typical shihtzu because she gets hot and dirty rolling down the mountains, getting in the water after the fish, etc.. We did not get her to leave her behind when we travel, the few times we have she is happy because she gets to go to Grandma and Grandpa’s house and play with her friend Lady (cocker spaniel).
While camping, Kodi, has her place. I have set her up a crate to ride on my 4 wheeler though she usually opts to be in the front of the action and on the back seat (extended seating). When back at camp she knows the places to get what she needs, water, food and her comfy bed. On cold nights she gets under her sheep blanket.
She is part of our family, she goes where we go, we didn’t get her to leave her behind. She will be turning 11 years old in May, cannot imagine life without her in it.
Attached is a picture of her after she took a dip in the creek, it was getting near bedtime and we didn’t want her to get even dirtier so she spent a little time in the back of the truck, as you can see she didn’t want to be there…she wanted out to play more. Curiousity didn’t just get the cat, it gets Kodi daily!
When our whole family used to go on vacation we found someone who kept our dog and cat together at their house. This worked out great for us and the animals were happy because the people had kids to play with them. Plus, it gave us piece of mind and then the people also made some money.
Now we just will have our daughter keep them at her house. But our goats, chickens, and duck will have to be watched by our neighbor’s daughter and she will love to do it and get paid, too.

They absolutely love it. My sister has two dogs, and so do we, so its the perfect matchup for them, and sometimes, I feel like they don’t even want to come home.
If I can’t take my dog with me, I have 2 of my animal loving friends babysit. I think my dog gets more treats and walks with sitters than when I am home. He loves it!!
When I travel, I leave the garage door cracked for my cats and lots of food and water. I also have the neighbor come over to check on them to make sure they’re okay. I also have a Chihuahua and he has his own vacation at grandma’s house

We usually have a family member house/pet sit and make sure that we leave the pets with a lot of new toys and treats so they get a little vacation themselves while we’re gone.
When I travel, I ask my Mother who lives nearby to come feed, water and check up on my two cats. I repay her by doing the same for her when she travels. Works out nicely.
