The Planetarium – One of my Favourite Places

Planetario Galileo Galilei - Palermo

The city´s Planetarium is called Galileo Galilei. It is located in the barrio de Palermo,  at the Tres de Febrero park, by a cute little lagoon surrounded by a forest.

I love visiting the Planetarium. I can describe it as being a sort of astronomy museum with meteorites and space images all over the place. While visiting in the Planetarium you could see the images of the solar system, which makes you feel as if you were in space.

I always loved its style. It is a kind of round building with five floors, six staircases and a 20 meters diameter room with capacity for 360 seats. The inside of the semi spherical dome is covered with reflective aluminium.

The Planetarium itself is located in the centre of the building, has over 100 projectors and is approximately five meters high with a weight of 2,5 tons. The cylindrical framework has independent projectors for the Moon, the Sun and all visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) and also has two spheres in the extremes that can project almost 9.000 stars, constellations and nebulas.

In the museum there are two pieces of lunar rock that were brought back to Earth by the Apollo XI mission and given to the Planetarium by Richard Nixon. You can also find meteorites that fell on Argentine territory. Sometimes there are film festivals and concerts.

If you like astronomy and architecture the Planetarium is a great place to visit.
