World of Color Splashing Soon at Disney’s California Adventure

After months of construction and preparations,  a spectacular nighttime water show will debut this spring at Disney’s California Adventure  park.  The production, named World of Color, will bring Disney animation to life as powerful fountains create the world’s largest projected water screen.

The production will take the audience on a journey through the animated world of Disney classics like Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King and Pocahontas as well as Disney-Pixar films like Toy Story and WALL-E. Combining hundreds of fountains, colors, audio and visual effects, including lasers, fog and fire, World of Color is sure to take water-infused entertainment to a new level.

Walt Disney Imagineers and Creative Entertainment workers have installed the infrastructure in the lagoon near Paradise Pier (map)  that will create the stage, as well as a vewing area with seating capacity of 9,000 for this 25-minute show.

To get an idea of the magnitude of this project, here are some statistics about the mechanics of World of Color:

  • More than 1,200 programmable fountains
  • Each fountain has controls for light, color intensity, water angle, etc.
  • Fountain heights range from 30 to 200 feet in the air, to help with the comparison, Mickey’s Fun Wheel , a Ferris-wheel attraction at the park, reaches a height of 150 feet
  • 30 high-definition projectors will project images on the wall of water 380 feet wide by 50 feet high

This is not the only expansion project taking place at Disneyland & California Adventures and guests are invited to view the progress as changes include:

  • Silly Symphony Swings   updated attraction coming Spring 2010
  • Little Mermaid -a total  immersion attraction taking  you under the sea with Ariel and all her friends in 2011
  • Wonder what Hollywood looked like back in Walt’s early days?  Imagine no more as Buena Vista Street will take you there beginning in 2012
  • Finally, in 2012, a whole new land will emerge at California Adventures with rides and attractions transporting guests to Pixar Animation’s  Cars Land, with the highly anticipated Radiator Springs Racers

With these enhancements coming to the park, this reminds me that my family is way overdue for a visit to Disneyland Resort and California Adventures!
