Decades of Beauty at The Modern
The Modern, officially known as the , is home to collections of modern and contemporary international art, representing a variety of movements, themes, and styles, built around five long pavilions and a reflecting pond. It is probably best known for its post-World War II art, with an impressive and diverse collection, worthy of many a repeat trip to see everything.
Currently on display (through February 14th, 2010) is FOCUS: Gardar Eide Einarsson, an exhibition of the Norwegian artist that explores the complex relationship between individuals and institutions. It’s edgy, and at times painful, in its exploration of society-imposed boundaries and the result of violating the boundaries.
Next up is Andy Warhol: The Last Decade (February 14th – May 16th, 2010), the first museum exhibition that explores the work of the American artist during the final eight years of his life. These final years, imbued with a renewed enthusiasm for work, were some of the most productive of Warhol’s career. The exhibition will include 55 works from both private collections and institutions, divided into themes. You’ll see abstract works, collaborations, black-and-white ads, death and religion focused pieces, self-portraits, camouflage patterns, and the Last Supper Series. This is not-to-be-missed!
