5 Things to Do With Your Kids When It’s Raining in Orange County
It doesn’t rain that often in Orange County, but it does happen every once in awhile. Even more rare is rain for more than a day or two, but this week it’s been raining since Sunday, and the kids are no doubt beginning to get a little (ok, a lot) stir crazy!
With so many activities based on the outdoors, what can you do in the area with the kids when it’s raining?
1. Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana (map)
It’s easy to spot “The Cube”, a 10 story, 108 foot structure at the Discovery Science Center. Inside is just as marvelous – besides the exhibits, the science center features several permanent displays where children can explore Perception, Dynamic Earth, Quake Zone, Techno Arts, Air & Space, Discovery Stadium and KidStation (for age 5 years and under).
The current exhibit is Secrets of Circles, exploring everything that has to do with circles compasses, kaleidoscope, things that roll, spheres, and more!
Admission is $12.95 for adults, and $9.95 for kids ages 3-17. There is also a 4-D theater for $3 for adults and $3 for kids ages 3-17.
2. Build-a-Bear in Downtown Disney (map)
This popular stuffed animal store is a great place to spend some time. Make a bear, a dog, or one of several other animals! After your child creates their new best friend, have lunch at the nearby Rainforest Cafe!
3. Pretend City in Irvine (map)
Designed like a pretend city (hence the name), this place is every child’s dream! The designers thought of everything – a post office, health center, farm, construction area, beach, gas station, house, and more – all children-friendly.
The Pretend City also offers classes (singing, sign language, art, music, “Tiny Tots Hip Hop”), parent and early childhood educator workshops, and other special programs such as Parent’s Night Out.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., admission is $10 for adults and children, $2 for infant to 12 months, and $8 for military and their family members. After 4 p.m., admission is $5 for adults and children, $1 for infant to 12 months, and $4 for the military and their family members.

4. Lucky Strike in Orange (map)
Bowling is a perfect rainy day activity, and Lucky Strike is well-known in the OC and in Los Angeles. With 24 lanes and 5 billiard tables, there’s almost always space for one more group! If the kids get bored of bowling, go right around the corner to Dave & Buster’s for some food and games!
4. Bowers Kidseum in Santa Ana (map)
5he Kidseum is an extension of the Bowers Museum, focusing on interactive learning for children. It’s the only cultural arts based museum for kids in Orange County, offering a unique experience!
The Kidseum has amazing areas, such as international dress-up, tribal instruments, ethnic masks, language exploration, and an art lab. There are also special programs such as Preschool Discoveries, Hola Ninos, and Mom’s Clubs.
Admission is $6 for ages 6 and up, under 3/Members get in free, and ages 6 and up free with current Bowers Museum ticket stub.
The first Sunday of every month is free, thanks to the Target Corporation, and Sana Ana residents (with proof of residency) get in free on the third Tuesday of every month.
