The Coup Performing in The Haight

2330934567_b4b228cc72The political hip-hop group from Oakland, California is set to play a show at The Independent located right in the Haight. The venue has been in operation for only 5 years after many previous venues that have shared the same address, featuring big names such as the Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, John Legend, M.I.A., and Mos Def.

The Coup is a three-member group that formed in 1992. The hip-hop band uses ‘70s inspired funk with powerful bass overlaid by political rap. The group’s focus is on hypercapitalism, warmongering, and racial politics all mixed with a bit of humor. Also, a random fact about this band is two of their songs were featured in the 2007 film production Superbad: “My Favorite Mutiny” and “Pork & Beef”.
