Walk the Walks at Waiheke
Get fit and go nature tripping at the same time with Free Summer Guided Walks on Waiheke Island.
Courtesy of the Auckland City Council, free guided walks on Waiheke Island are held every Wednesday since last December last year and will go on until the end of February.
From downtown Auckland, simply ride the 10:00am Fullers Ferry to Waiheke Island. Return fares are at $32 per adult, $16 per child, and $80 per family of four (two adults and two children or one adult and three children). A professional guide will meet you at the Matiatia Ferry Terminal on Waiheke, at 10.40 am.
Please be advised that walks are 1 – 2 hours in duration for those with average fitness level, and will go ahead rain or shine. No booking is necessary.
If you plan to organise a group of more than 10 people, please advise the Auckland City Council at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz or Phone 379 2020.
Now if you’re more adventurous and would like to discover Waiheke on your own, the island offers eight different walkways or side trips with descriptions and maps available at the Official Waiheke Island Website, while you can pick up free walkway maps at the information centres on the Wharfs or at Artworks on the island.
Things to Remember:
1) While walking, it is best to maintain a conversation. If you find yourself breathing too lightly, simply increase your pace a bit. If, however, you can’t seem to catch your breath, slow down.
2) Best to walk alone, especially on unfamiliar grounds. Take a friend with you for company or get the whole family involved.
3) With the sun setting in Auckland until past 8:30pm these days, don’t forget to Slip (on a shirt), Slop (on sunblock with SPF 30), Slap (on a hat or cap with a brim or flaps), and Wrap (on a pair of sunnies – that’s sunglasses for tourists), just the same.
