Seattle Photo Op: Starbuck’s at the Market
There are probably few places in the world that haven’t heard of , and there is certainly lots of controversy surrounding the company and its product, but for those of growing up here in Seattle, it’s still our home town coffee company.
The original Starbucks was opened in the Pike Place Market () and it sold quality coffee beans, coffee makers, and other coffee accessories. The first location was at 2000 Western Street, and it moved to its current location at 1912 Pike Place () in 1976. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the company began selling cups of coffee and espresso, a controversial business move, because who would have buy coffee when you can make it at home.
There was no lingering or free wi-fi. You picked up your coffee and left, whether it be to wander the Market or off to work. It’s still much the same way, and if you want parking, you’ll be hard pressed. It’s a tow away zone in front of the store.
Most every trip to the Market has me stopping by to pick up a cup of joe – for old time’s sake.
