Cocktails Turning Japanese at Tokonoma Shochu Bar and Lounge

Japanese isn’t all about sushi and tempura. Sydney’s new Tokonoma Shochu Bar and Lounge introduces locals to this Asian country’s other treats. shochu

The bar is the third and latest venture for the folks behind Toko Restaurant. Its indigenous beverages include its namesake Shochu, a drink distilled from barley, buckwheat, sweet potato, and sugar. It sounds bizarre, but just stop and think what’s in beer!

Other unusual drinks on offer include Gen awa cha (Lychee bubble tea with Genmaicha infused shiro shochu, lemon and lychee jelly) and Martini (Shiro shochu with Hendricks gin, cucumber and mint).

The drinks go down a little smoother when paired with Tokonoma Shochu’s bite-sized dishes or 11-course tasting menu.

Locals have already embraced this new watering hole, so you might want to wait a while if you’re hoping for a couple of quiet drinks after work. But if you don’t mind a bubbling atmosphere, Tokonoma Shochu Bar and Lounge is well worth a look.
