Guerilla Christmas trees

Trafalgar Square is my favourite Christmas tree in London. But there’s a new challenger there – a little tree in the middle of Wimbledon Common. A real, growing, ordinary little tree, with all the tinsel and shiny baubles you could ever want.

Guerilla gardening is something I know a bit about (and heartily approve of). But this ‘guerilla garlanding’ is new to me. People have been scuttling out and about and decorating trees all over London. Guerilla Gardening has some great pics of them -  in St George’s Circus, Muswell Hill Road, the Wimbledon Common [map]  tree, and a particularly imaginative tree decorated with ‘stars’ bearing the faces of local councillors as a protest against the council’s ‘totally rubbish’ tree.

I don’t know how long the Wimbledon Christmas tree will be there, but it’s worth a wander to see!

While I was finding out about the Christmas trees, by the way, I found the most inspiring video about a blind guerilla gardener who works on Ryland Road, London NW5 [map]. Sean Canavan won a ‘Camden in Bloom’ award this year for his work – he has completely transformed the street where he lives.
