Travel gadget gift guide: Part 2

h_Triton_1500_2000Whether you’re looking for a gift to help the traveler in your life protect their electronic equipment, document their travels or just figure out where the heck they are, there are plenty of ideas to suit either the techno-geek or the techno-phobe.

For the techno-geek in your life, the Magellan Triton GPS uses the SiRFstar III chip and National Geographic TOPO! maps, with navigation accurate up to 3 metres. It’s rugged and waterproof, and features a large colour touchscreen display. It also has a compass screen so you always know which way is due north. It includes an integrated two-megapixel camera (which allows you to plot images to a specific point on a map) and you can add an SD card into the memory card slot to add more maps to the unit.

ibagzLess technical yet still highly useful is the iBagz from iFrogz, a water-resistant commercial-grade plastic bag with two layers of Ziploc/Velco technology to ensure your iPod survives rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions. It fits any electrical device the size of a video iPod with a regular-size audio jack. It’s water-resistant (not waterproof – so don’t take it diving), so it’s ideal for backpacking, boating, skiing, mountain biking or other outdoor activities. It definitely beats the Ziploc bag I previously used to carry around my gear.

minoHD_black_and_personalizedFor middle-of-the-road tech-geekiness, the Flip is an easy-to-use portable camcorder that comes in high-definition and standard-resolution models (as well as the slim and customizable Flip Mino and Flip MinoHD). The Flip makes it easy to share videos on the road, with its signature flip-out USB arm that plugs into any Mac or PC to access a drag-and-drop interface for video sharing – whether via e-mail or direct upload to YouTube or MySpace. It comes pre-loaded with FlipShare software for organizing, editing and uploading. The Flip is currently available in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.
